Q: My employees keep asking for raises whenever they like, and it’s very uncomfortable for me to keep telling them NO, what’s the right way to go about it?
A: In most cases the reason why employees keep asking for raises is because it’s the only way for them to get one. the best way to go about raises is to set a scheduled time twice a year when you officially review each employee and you discuss with them a raise this will accomplish two things, 1) they know that there is a set time for it and they don’t have to worry about it all year, and 2) you know that you take care of it twice a year and you don’t have to think about it.
The reason for doing it twice a year is because doing it once a year is not motivation enough to employees, you want them to know that they next discussion about the raise will happen shortly so they have to perform well.
This doesn’t mean you have to give them double raises, just take the raise and split it and give half of it every 6 months.
